A Thriller story can fall into the following categories:
- Builds up tension and suspense throughout the whole film.
- The lighting is normally darkened and muted, to give a sinister effect.
- Moody music is used for different effects.
- Setting and atmosphere is in a dark and clustered place.
- There is normally a vulnerable victim, normally a female or a child.
- A serious villain / antagonist.
- Narrative enigma.
- There is normally a twist in the plot.
- A crime at the core of the narrative (often murder).
- A complex narrative structure.
- Protagonist who is systematically disempowered and drawn into a complex web of intrigued.
- Extraordinary events happening in ordinary situations.
- Themes of indentity.
- Themes of mirroring.
- Themes of voyeurism (e.g. Psycho)
- Protagonist with a flaw which is exploited by the antagonist.
- Title sequence often reflects on the character's psychological state.
- There is often a scene near the end of the film where the protagonist is in danger.
- Mise-en-scène which echoes the protagonist's plight.
