A Thriller story can fall into the following categories:

  • Builds up tension and suspense throughout the whole film.
  • The lighting is normally darkened and muted, to give a sinister effect.
  • Moody music is used for different effects.
  • Setting and atmosphere is in a dark and clustered place.
  • There is normally a vulnerable victim, normally a female or a child.
  • A serious villain / antagonist.
  • Narrative enigma.
  • There is normally a twist in the plot.
  • A crime at the core of the narrative (often murder).
  • A complex narrative structure.
  • Protagonist who is systematically disempowered and drawn into a complex web of intrigued.
  • Extraordinary events happening in ordinary situations.
  • Themes of indentity.
  • Themes of mirroring.
  • Themes of voyeurism (e.g. Psycho)
  • Protagonist with a flaw which is exploited by the antagonist.
  • Title sequence often reflects on the character's psychological state.
  • There is often a scene near the end of the film where the protagonist is in danger.
  • Mise-en-scène which echoes the protagonist's plight.
