For my Foundation Portfolio, I have decided to work on my own. Even though I have an effective relationship with all the members in the class, I wanted to work on my own as i could be more creative and not be restricted if working with other members.
The Industry
When researching the 'Thriller Industry' I was able to find numerous facts and figures from different sources, the main source I collected my information from was http://www.imdb.com/. When first looking into the Thriller industry the first thing we should know is, What is a Thriller?.
According to 'http://www.filmsite.org/thrillerfilms.html' Thrillers 'are the type of films known to promote intense excitement, suspense, a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, and nerve-wracking tension. Thriller and suspense films are virtually synonymous and interchangeable categorizations, with similar characteristics and features'.
I found out that Thriller's has always been a popular and consistent genre within the film industry. I have discovered the top 10 Thriller movies at this moment in time and they are:
The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Pulp Fiction, The Dark Knight, Rear Window, Fight Club, Psycho, The Unusual Suspects, The Silence of the Lambs and finally The Matrix.
The box office figures for all of these films were extremely high when they first opened in the cinemas. Below is a list of box office figures for each film, unfortunately some films where only released in the USA, so there is no record of UK figures.
The Godfather - $ 302,393
The Godfather Part II - $244,000
Pulp Fiction - $9,31,882 (USA) - £10 Million (UK)
Dark Night - £11 Million
Rear Window - $234,258 (1983 version) - $15,172 (200 Version)
Fight Club - £1,177,219 (UK) -$11,035,485 (USA)
Psycho - $32,000,000
The Unusual Suspects - $645,363
The Silence of the Lambs - $13,766,814 (USA) - £292,592 (UK)
The Matrix - £3,384,948 (UK) - $27,788,331 (USA)
From the list above, all the films are voted the top thrillers at the moment, not only because of the amount of money the production companies and Directors made, but because they are true thrillers that stick to all of the conventions stated in my previous post.
Overall the thriller industry is growing rapidly, with more independent film companies producing thriller films that are taking the cinemas by storm. The new thriller films have a slight advantage on the technology now, when the very first thriller was released in 1923 the technology was limited and was so expensive to purchase. Now, the technology has increased it has enabled the film directors to produce much prominent films. Another example is Youtube and Microsoft Windows Movie Maker, both of these programmes has inspired the audience to get involved with film making and experience the life behind the camera.
